There’s something special about the sound of tap shoes hitting the floor — rhythm, energy, expression, and joy all rolled into one.
This Memorial Day, San Diego’s tap community is coming together to celebrate National Tap Dance Day with a free afternoon of classes, performances, music, and community connection. Whether you’re an experienced tapper, brand new to dance, or simply curious about the art form, everyone is welcome to join the fun.

What Is National Tap Dance Day?
National Tap Dance Day is celebrated every year on May 25 in honor of legendary performer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and the rich history of tap dance as a uniquely American art form. The observance was officially recognized by Congress in 1989 and continues to bring dancers and communities together across the country.

Everyone Is Welcome
One of the best things about tap dance is that it brings people together. You don’t need to belong to a studio or have years of experience to participate. National Tap Dance Day is about celebrating movement, music, creativity, and community.
As the organizers put it, “No matter what studio you are with (if any), what level you are, or how much you know, tap dancing feels great, and we want to share the joy of dance with you!”
